We have come to the end of yet another eventful academic year 2018 - 2019. It is with a sense of pride and deep satisfaction that I present the Annual Report of the school. Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara has carved a name for itself among the premier institutions in Kochi, both in academics and non-academic activities, due to the grace of the Almighty and the excellent teamwork of the Management, Staff, Parents and Students.
This report gives a glimpse of the achievements both in the curricular and co-curricular areas that have done us proud. Even though the list is rather long, time constraints compelled us to include only a few.
At the Bhavan, we have always been committed to create an environment in the school which helps the young minds to blossom and provide a platform for individual thinking and holistic development of the child’s personality.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN ACADEMICS
The school secured 100% results in classes X and XII Board Exam for the academic year 2017 - 2018.
In Std. X, 185 students qualified the AISSE of which 24 students secured A1 in all subjects.
In STD XII, 183 students appeared for the AISSCE Exam and 20 students secured A1 in all subjects. Adithyan Unni, Sharath Santhosh.Ujjwal Nath, Vignesh M Nair (96.4%), Saurav Thampan (97%) and Donna Varghese(93.6%) reiterated their excellence by becoming the toppers of our school in the Science, Commerce and Arts streams respectively.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The present student strength from Classes I to XII is 2683 with 123 teaching and 19 non teaching staff members.
To hone the skills and talents in students, they are divided into eight houses and all students from Std 6-9 are members in any one of the various clubs that have been functioning quite effectively. Intra mural activities and competitions are held regularly.
The student council with representatives from each section of Std. VI to XII is functioning very well.
The resource room facility, for students identified with learning disabilities, is functioning well under the stewardship of 5 specially trained staff and at present the needs of 103 such students from Class I to VIII are being catered to commendably. Our school is also an accredited centre of the National Institute of Open Schooling.
The school library is stocked with 16,414 books and new books are added every year.
PTA meetings for Classes I- XII were held in the month of June 2018. Parent representatives for each class were selected .

EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
Our student exchange programme with Cranbrook school, Kent is more than a decade and a half old.. A team of 26 students and 2 teachers, visited Cranbrook School , Kent, U K in June 2018. As a continuation of the Programme , 26 students and 4 teachers from Cranbrook school , Kent , UK visited our school . The main purpose of this programme is to fully contribute to the integral formation of students, in a globalized environment.
SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS & ACTIVITIES
Our school won the 3rd prize in Mathrubhumi VKC Nanma Award for the year 2017-18. Chief guest, Sri. Raju Narayanaswami, MD, Coconut Development Board, gave away the prizes to the winners.
Our school project ‘URJAS’ has been selected as one among the top five projects in the National Science Conclave held at Amrita Vishwa Vidya Peetam, Ettimadai. The team members are Kokilavarshini, Gayathri M Das, Neeraja Ranjith & Ishitha Praveen of class VIII.
Our school team (Adithya S Pillai & Gowri N) participated in the CBSE Regional Level Science Exhibition 2019 held at Lions School, Palghat and got selected to CBSE National Level Science Exhibition.
INOVIT 2019, the National Level Science Contest held at VIT Vellore, our students secured Ist position in Quiz and Poster presentation . The quiz team received a cash prize of Rs .20,000/- and Rs .5,000 /- for Poster presentation. Prize winners are Anand Rajagopal, Krishna Rajmohan, T H Suhail, Nazrin K U, Devika K M and Neha Reshma.
Ms Jayasree L, HOD, Department of Physics, won the Bhavan’s Jindal Award for the best teacher in Senior Secondary Category instituted by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai.
Ms .Preethy Jayaraj and Ms.Ambily P G have been ranked topper and Ist Runner Up respectively in the All Kerala Bhavan’s Teachers General awareness test, ‘News for Use 2018’, conducted by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram Kendra.
Ms .Helen Earnest, our Chemistry teacher won the Award for’Excellence in Teaching’ instituted by Vidyodaya Trust.
The 9th National Integration Camp was held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s SL Public School , Amritsar, from 1st to 6th June 2018. A team of six students and one teacher took part in the camp.
Quizzical.ly Pratheeksha 2018, the Inter-School Quiz Competition was held on 28th July. Sri. A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, IAS, Kochi Metro Rail Limited Managing Director, inaugurated the fest.
Principal, Vice Principal , teachers and a few students made their participation in the ‘Great Pedestrian March’ organized by the Cochin Orthopaedic Society on 2nd October, taking up the cause of pedestrian walkways .
Our school hosted a two day seminar on ‘Climate Change’ organized by Devecha Centre for Climate Change , Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in association with Edu World Foundation and Talent spire Intelligent Learning . Eminent speakers from Devecha Centre, VSSC & CUSAT interacted with the students . Around 1200 students from different schools participated in the seminar.
In connection with Kerala Piravi day, ‘Mudiyettu’ – a traditional art form of Kerala, was performed in the campus by Keezhillam Unnikrishnan & team.
ShikshanBharati evaluation was held in the school on 12th and 13th of November.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN QUIZ & MUN
Anand Rajagopal and Unnimaya ( XI C2 ) won first prize for ENQUIRE Quiz held at Bhavan’s VarunaVidyalaya . They have also secured a cash prize of Rs 1000/- . They also secured the Second Runner Up position and a cah prize of Rs. 2000/- in the M X Joseph Memorial Toc H Super Quiz.
Anand Rajagopal and Unnimaya V (XI )secured first prize in the GST Quiz and Sandhra K P (XII) secured second prize in the painting competition conducted by The Central Tax and Central Excise, Thiruvananthapuram Zone.
Unnimaya V and Anand Rajagopal (XI) secured first prize and Nandana Sony and Sidharth (XI) won second prize in the Kochi edition of The Hindu Inter School Quiz competition. Unnimaya V and Anand Rajagopal (XI) secured second prize in the Nationals of The Hindu Inter School Quiz, held at Calcutta and they also won a cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-
Anand Rajagopal (XI)secured second prize in the District Level Quiz Competition -Manorama Big Q Challenge 2018 conducted by Manorama News. He was selected for the State Level Quiz Competition.
In Tathva’18, conducted by N I T, Calicut, Anand Rajagopal (XI) secured first position in Samasya Quiz, Anand Rajagopal & Krishna Rajmohan secured first position in Kick Off and Prahelika.
In the ‘Saevus’ Eco Achievers Quiz, Hemang Pai, Sunand P Menon and Rhea Ann Roy secured First position.
Eight of our students secured First, Second & Third ranks in the All Kerala Bhavan’ s Scholarship Examination 2017-18.
Many of our students won prizes in the various Olympiads conducted during the academic year
As part of the British Council activity, Interclass Model United Nations (MUN) was held on 6th December 2018.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN SPORTS & GAMES
Our school hosted the CBSE Basketball Tournament (Cluster X & XI) 2018. It was inaugurated by Sri. Venugopal C Govind, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra. The finals of the tournament was held on 14th September and Sri.Basil Philip, Indian Basketball Player, was the chief guest of the day. Our school emerged winners in the Under 17 girls category and qualified for the National CBSE Basketball Tournament held at Agra.
26th Inter School Bhavan’s Basketball Tournament was held from 4th to 7th September. Sri.E Ramankutty, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra, inaugurated the tournament. Our school basketball team emerged winners in girls category
In the 36th D r.K M Munshi Memorial Athletic Meet held at BVM, Eroor, our students bagged the Overall Trophy in the under 10 Girls Category . Mary Ann V Jacob secured a gold medal for Shot Put and set a new meet record.
Mary Ann V Jacob (IV) won bronze medal in the 20th Sub junior Kerala State Fencing Championship 2018-19.
In the CBSE Inter School Sports and Games Competition 2018-19 (Cluster XI) held at Pala, Vishwanath Singh (XII) secured first position in Shot Put (Under 19) , Bhadra S (XII) secured third position in Javelin Throw (Under 19) and Meenakshi S Nair (Under 14 )secured third position in Long jump.
Rebecca Martin (XI) participated in the 35th South National Basketball Championship for Boys and Girls, held at Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Rebecca Martin, Sarangi Santhosh and Anjana Rose represented Ernakulam District in the Inter District Basket Ball Tournament.
In the CBSE Inter school Sports and Games Competition 2018-19 (South Zone) held at Bangalore, our students secured 2nd Runner Up position.
In the CBSE National Athletic Meet held at Devankara, Karnataka, Viswanath Singh of Std. XII secured 9th position in Shot-put.
Our students participated in the Ernakulam District Junior Athletic Meet and Mar Athanesius Athletic meet and secured prizes in various events.
In the All Kerala CBSE Cricket Tournament conducted by Cochin Refineries School, Amabalamugal, our team secured the second position.
In the All Kerala CBSE Cricket Tournament conducted by Mar Athanasius International School, Kothamangalam, our team secured the 2nd Runner Up position.
Diya Arun won the first position in the All Kerala CBSE Badminton tournament in Single Senior Category conducted by Mar Athnasius International School, Kothamangalam. She received a cash prize of Rs 10,000/-
Diya Arun, Megha Rajesh and Sreya Krishnan participated in the South zone CBSE Badminton tournament conducted by CBSE at Banglore and secured second runner up position.
Diya Arun and Divya R Balasubramanian emerged winners in the CBSE Badminton Tournament conducted by Assissi Vidyaniketan School , Chembumukku.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN YOGA
Our students emerged winners in the District Yoga Championship organised by Yoga Association of Kerala and State Sports Council.
In the District Yogasana Championship 2018, Ms.Suseela Gopinathan won First position in the Veteran Women Age Group organised by Ernakulam
District Yoga Sports Association and our students secured various prizes and qualified to participate in the Kerala State Championship.
In the State Yoganasa Championship organised by Kerala Yoga Association, Ms.Suseela Gopinath, our Yoga Teacher won First position. Our students Delffy davis and Divya R Nair secured Second & third positions respectively.
N C C
Our school Ncc troop functions actively with 50 cadets, 25 students joined our Ncc troop in the academic year 2018-2019. It is to our credit that 22cadets appeared for Ncc A certificate examination and passed with flying colours. 17cadets attended the CATC at Govt.Polytechnic college (GPTC) Kalamassery duringChristmas holidays. One of our cadet attended National level Ncc camp during Christmas holidays. Our cadets actively participated in the International Day of Yoga and swach Bharath campaign . Special parades were conducted as part of the Independence day,Gandhi jayanthi , Republic day and Ncc day. 18 cadets appeared for the A Certificate examination in the year 2018-2019.
WORKSHOPS ATTENDED
Principal Ms Sunitha S, Vice Principal Ms Mini K, Head of the departments and a few teachers attended a workshop by Dr. Nirmala Krishnan on the topic ‘Innovation In School Education/ Sustainability of Branding, held at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra.
Principal, Ms. Sunitha S attended IX All India Principals Conference-2018 held at Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir, Nagpur organised by Shikshan Bharati, Mumbai.
As part of the Faculty Improvement Programme, the teachers attended various subject specific workshops as well as workshops to enable them to promote the holistic development of students.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
Charity benefits the giver more than the receiver. The capacity to care is the thing which gives life the deepest significance. Our school prides itself not only on academic success, but also on creating school ethos with relationships and community at its heart. As part of this, our school attempts to teach children to create a positive impact in society.
Our Students initiated the charity work by contributing an amount to the ‘ SEAL A DESIRE BOX’ from Classes VI to XII. This noble venture would help the students to realise the importance of sharing and caring and to develop a feeling of empathy towards their fellow beings.
In the month of June, the school provided provisions like rice, sugar, jaggery, oil, soap, curry powders etc worth Rs.10,000/- to the poor families at Perandoor.
In a noble gesture, the Interact Club of the school jointly with the Alumni, PTA and the Rotary Club of Cochin East joined hands with the students of the school to launch the relief material collection drive in the school premises on 17th August 2018. Further the school, being a relief camp housed over 500 people displaced by the floods. The school team contributed generously towards the flood relief in the form of food, medicines and clothes. The students also took the initiative to collect clothes and food from nearby localities and contribute to the relief campers. Rather than spending holidays with family and friends, our students coordinated the collection of relief materials, carefully sorting out and distributing them to the flood victims.
A ‘Back to School’ campaign initiated by Mathrubhoomi – Nanma, was taken forward by the SEED Club and the Integrity Club of the school. The clubs in collaboration with the students of Std. I to XII collected school bags, lunch boxes and stationery items for the students of flood affected schools. Bags and stationery items worth Rs.50, 000/- were given to SNMHS, Moothakunnam and Samoothiri Memorial Higher Secondary School, Alangad. Some school kits were also sent to the schools in Wayanad. Students also collected and donated 300 books to a library at Gothuruthu which was seriously affected by the flood. These kind gestures and warmth of our students overwhelmed the beneficiaries.
Financial assistance was also provided to the flood-hit students and staff of our school. Non-teaching staff from extremely poor resource settings was supported with provision kits during the month of August to November.
Director E Ramankutty handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakhs to the District Collector as a humble endeavour of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan towards the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
Interact Club conducted a Diwali Mela as part of Enterprise Programme on 29th October.
Rs 23, 500/- was raised for various outreach programmes.
On 9th December, students of the Integrity Club accompanied by a teacher visited Capernaum Charitable Trust. They spent some time there interacting with the inmates and gifted them with Christmas Cakes, mats, bed sheets and towels.
The Students of Std VIII visited the fishermen’s colony in Elamakkara with grocery kits in the 1st week of December. They distributed 15 kits to 15 different poor and needy families. Students interacted with those families and it served as an eye opener for them.
MOTIVATIONAL TALKS & SESSIONS
Students of Std.XI and Std. XII attended a talk on the topic ‘Nano Science’ by Mr Kannan Ramaswamy, a renowned meteorologist.
A talk by Ms Sincy Thomas, Outreach Manager, IRIS (Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science), was organised for the students of Std.VIII & IX on 25 July.
A talk on ‘Disaster Management’ was conducted for the students of class VIII. The chief guest was Ms Simna N V, Faculty member at Institute of Land and Disaster Management.
Students Educational Film Society presented a Short Film titled ‘Aakashangalkkappuram’ for students of classes III to VIII.
Radio Mirchi Kidathon, an interactive session on Healthy Food Habits organised by Radio Mirchi was conducted for classes III & IV.
A Career Guidance session was arranged by the PTA for the parents and students of Classes VIII to XI.
Before concluding this report, I bow my head in reverence to the God Almighty for the blessings He has showered upon this institution. We are indeed blessed to have a very supportive management and I would like to express our sincere thanks to the Chairman, Sri.C Venugopal C Govind, Director, Sri.E Ramankutty and the Committee Members of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kochi Kendra who have helped, guided and most importantly encouraged us on all occasions.
